We're still alive!

We are still alive! This will just be a quick update on many different topics I've touched on in past posts.

Loans: We are continuing to make progress on our loans. Total balance is down under $70k (not much under, but still under). We're signed up for graduated repayment on the federal loans, so our extra is all targeted at the highest interest loan. I cashed in a savings bond, which enabled us to pay off one mini-loan. I've also been doing some market research with Pinecone Surveys and Focus Pointe Global, and I made some money doing tasks on Gradible (referral link--gets you 20 Loancreds). (Fair warning, the Gradible website is horribly difficult to navigate and not remotely user-friendly.) Currently all our "extra money" (excepting some birthday and Christmas gifts) is going towards debt. The 2015 goal is to pay down $20,000. This is a stretch goal. It will depend to some extent on how our taxes work out and how expensive the baby's delivery is (see below under savings).

Job: I'm trying to get a job to accelerate the debt repayment. I'm looking at childcare (short-term, since I'll need time off for the baby's birth) and tutoring (flexible). I've also thought of teaching some beginning knitting classes.

Food: This one has come down by itself. I don't know why. November grocery spending: $149.27. December grocery spending: $177.10. November eating out: $84.71 (including a road trip where we didn't pack food--duh--and our six month anniversary). December eating out: $41.15. That said, I'm just waiting for payday to place a huge order on Amazon of all the gluten free flours we're running out of, so January might be high. But I'm okay with these levels. Still not doing a good job on the actual meal planning thing, but I'm getting better at using everything before it goes bad, so close enough.

Budget: I gave up messing with Excel and bought YNAB (referral link, which saves you $6 off) on a half-off sale. Good choice, in my opinion.

Savings: We have saved $1000 against a potential tax bill and $4500 against the baby's birth. Whatever we don't need, plus any tax refund we may get, will go to debt. These are the huge financial unknowns of 2015. But we should have a good sense of the taxes by late February at the latest, and we should have the baby's birth sorted out by the end of the summer. Plenty of time to tighten our belts to reach our debt goal if we need to.

Menu & groceries, week of Oct 6 (plus announcement!)

Oh dear, I've neglected this blog quite sadly. I'd like to offer as a partial excuse that I was struggling through the first trimester. That's right, I'm pregnant! The baby is due right around the end of March/beginning of April. We are thrilled and excited.

I'm still fighting with my food budget. I want it to be somewhere that's challenging but doesn't make us miserable. It seems to want to be around $225 for groceries with another $75-$100 for eating out. On the positive side, that's still well under the USDA cost of food at home's "thrifty plan" for a family of our size, which is $370/month and does not include eating out. I'm not exactly sure what food the plan includes (and they redesigned their website so I can't figure out where to look it up), but it has never been a difficult goal for me to beat. But on the negative side, I'll be honest and say that I'm not feeling a pinch. And when we have as much debt as we do, we probably should be feeling pinched!

Some thoughts on reducing the bill, in no particular order:
  • I'm working on being more organized with meal planning, which I think will help cut our costs. (This week's menu below!)
  • I'm still not shopping at Aldi. Jewel is currently running a promotion where you can get stickers that you can redeem for a free pot at the end of the year. We are pretty short on pots, and so this promotion (plus the convenience of Jewel combined with the inconvenience of pregnancy) is keeping me there. I suspect that our budget will drop once I start shopping nearly exclusively at Aldi, but that's a project for 2015.
  • We're considering eating more meatless meals. We already eat meatless on Friday (we're Catholic), but other than that, I have to admit, to me a meal is a meat, a starch, and a vegetable. I came up with this idea when my aunt spent a weekend with us. She's a vegetarian and we had two dinners (bean sloppy joes and spinach quiche) which were yummy and didn't feel like "meals without meat".
  • Track grocery spending in detail. What are we spending money on? I think the answer is produce and dairy, for the most part, but I'm wondering if there's a leak I'm not aware of.
  • Eating out...I like to go on dates. And I like to take our visitors out for Chicago-style pizza. I have to think of a creative way to fulfill these desires without spending so much money!
  • Other ideas? Comments welcome.
Ok, the menu. The spine of this week is a 4.5lb pork loin rib end roast that I got on sale.
Monday: Roast pork in the crockpot with rice and carrots.
Tuesday: Leftover pork as "tacos" over rice.
Wednesday: Pork strip stirfry with green beans and rice.
Thursday: Pork shepherd's pie.
Friday: Broccoli-cheddar soup.
Saturday: Last pork slices, fried, with potatoes and salad.
Sunday: Sausage slices with potatoes. (Might be something else if we still have leftover pork, but I'm guessing we won't.)

Food challenge update

Well, I know our month isn't over yet, but I can already see how this challenge is going to shape up....it's a FAIL! Our current expenditure on food is $245.76.

So where did we go wrong? I'm happy with the groceries portion. We are at $137.53 so far, and while I might need to go buy more produce, we won't be over $150 for the month. It's the eating out category that was a disaster. A shocking nearly half of our food ($108.23) is eating out!

The big thing that messed it up was that we invited a friend over for dinner, but when I met him downtown, it turned out we didn't have time to get back to our apartment before he had to catch his plane. So we took him to a restaurant....that was $55 right there. Bad for the budget, but I'm not really sure what else we could have done. I suppose we should have found a cheaper place to eat. Tough in an area you're not familiar with though.

I'm comfortable with the rest of the eating out section.  This includes some meals during travel to the wedding, and Mr. Dreamer got dinner after work with some co workers. We also had dinner out as a celebration of some exciting news. This section is higher than I would like it to be in terms of numbers, but I can't really point to any particular item that I wish we hadn't done. And money is there to be used (thoughtfully, yes, but used). So as long as I'm correct that this is an unusual number, it's fine.

So I guess the challenge will continue through the Aug/Sept month. This will be a bit harder, I think, because we might get low on some staples. But oh well! Paying down debt is supposed to be uncomfortable.

Finding a budget system that works

We currently use an Excel spreadsheet for our budget. I took Michelle Singletary's free budget template (unfortunately I don't remember exactly where it came from, but you can google for it) and added a third tab where we enter individual transactions. Then the spreadsheet adds them up into the "expenses" tab. (If anyone wants this, leave a comment with your email address and I'll send it to you.)

This is working pretty well on the whole, but what it doesn't have is an easy way to see how much money you still need to spend this month. For example, we haven't paid our rent yet (it's due the 1st). But there is nowhere that our budget says, "Be careful! You still have to pay this bill! That "extra" money is not really extra!" We considered buying YNAB (www.youneedabudget.com), which has really good reviews, but didn't want to spend the money right now. So first I'm going to try to edit the spreadsheet and see if we can come up with something free. I'll post back and update.

Goal #1 is halfway done!

I realized today that we have enough money sitting around in the bank to destroy all the interest before the loans enter repayment. Because I know we can get rid of the interest, it makes sense to get rid of our first loan as fast as possible. That way that loan won't continue to accumulate interest.

So I just requested a payoff amount and submitted a payment! As of tomorrow, loan #1 will be paid in full! It feels so good to have met that milestone, even though that loan only represents 2.5% of our total debt. (I have to say, I really understand the psychological appeal of the debt snowball starting with lowest balance and why some people would choose to pay their debt down that way.)

Short term goal #1

We have a lot of debt. The big number can be a little overwhelming. I think it's important to set little sub-goals along the way. So here's our first goal (it's a two-parter):
  • Pay off all the outstanding interest on all the loans. (Right now there is about $1850 of interest that has been collecting on the unsubsidized loans. This will continue to accumulate, I believe to the tune of $1500 before the deadline.)
  • Pay off the first loan completely. ($2,000 at 6.8%.) 
Deadline: November 31st, 2014. This is the date that the loans technically enter repayment. Wouldn't it be great to have the first loan paid off before a payment on it is even due?

What that means: $5350 in four months works out to about $1337.50/month. This seems perfectly doable to me. We have some extra savings we can use, but I think we can do it without using them. (I'm trying to keep these goals easy enough that they are meetable without being miserable. If it's ridiculously easy, the next goal will be harder.) Maybe we can even start chipping away at loan #2!

Challenge for this month: Food

Our fiscal months run from the 15th to the 14th because Mr. Dreamer gets paid on the 15th and it makes it easier for me if I know exactly what the income is throughout the month. (We also moved in on June 16th, so that's convenient. That first month actually ran from June 7th (our wedding) to July 14th, because I'm in charge and I wanted it to.) We are still working out the details of the budget because we've only been in Chicago for a little over a month.

Our current monthly food budget is $200. I usually just write this down as "groceries" to make my life easier, but it actually includes all food--groceries and eating out. So far this month we have spent $140.50. That means that we are 70.25% of the way through our grocery budget and 32.26% of the way through our month. Yeah. Not quite on track.

In our defense, there have been a couple of unusual expenditures. We were out of town for a wedding, and about $25 of the amount spent is due to that (travel food, etc.). Also, I have made three stock-up purchases this month: a ten-pound bag of rice, a bag of potatoes, and nine (!) pounds of ground turkey that was on sale for very cheap.

So here's the challenge: No more food buying! That doesn't literally mean no more, because we are going to need produce before August 14th. We may also need dairy (Mr. Dreamer loves milk....) and I am giving myself an exception for yeast so that I can make rolls. So this challenge has two parts:

1. Don't buy anything except the above three categories.
2. Come in under $200 total for the month.

This should be a perfectly achievable goal, particularly if I get my produce from Aldi, not Jewel. (Jewel is much closer, so it sometimes wins by convenience, but I finally dragged myself to Aldi last week and was shocked at the difference in price.) I'll check back in and let you know how things are going.
